What is an angular contact ball bearing?
Similar to other ball bearings, angular contact ball bearings are compose of inner and outer races, ball complement and bearing cages; however, different to other ball bearings like a deep groove ball bearing, an angular contact ball bearing is designed with axially asymmetric races.
As a result, angular contact ball bearings are more suitable for supporting “combined loads” (loading in both the radial and axial directions); pure axial-load supporting in one direction is also possible. Generally speaking, the supporting capability of an axial load is determined by the size of contact angle. The larger the contact angle, the bigger the supporting capability for an axial load; and at the same time, the smaller the supporting capability for a radial load.
According to angular contact ball bearing manufacturers, single-row, and double-row angular contact ball bearings are both popular ones in the market. A single row angular contact ball bearing is suitable for carrying axial-load acting in one direction only; as a result, they are usually used in pairs or multi-arrangement in many applications. A double row angular contact ball bearing, however, is suitable for both an axial-load and a radial-load in both directions.
