What is a synchronous belt?
Synchronous belts are also called as toothed belts because they are flat belts with internal teeth. And timing belts are specific type of synchronous belts to transmit rotational forces.
Toothed belts are usually combined-use with sprockets or toothed pulleys, so that the teeth of belts and toothed pulleys/sprockets can match well with each other to track movement or to transmit power more efficiently. As a result, if only belts are correctly tensioned, they can provide synchronous operation with precise transmission ratio and small acting force on axis.
More often than not, synchronous belts (endless belts) are made of polyurethane or neoprene and reinforced with glass fiber or steel cable. Cored with glass fiber or steel cable is to provide increased tensile strength, in order to prevent belt break. Nylon facings can also be coated on belts for better wear resistance.
